Geelong Cats vs Carlton Blues
Stadium : Etihad Stadium,Melbourne
Date : Saturday 13 April 2013
Time : 19:40 (AEDT)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 212, Geelong 94, Carlton 116, draws 2
LAST TIME: Geelong 14.13 (97) defeated Carlton 11.19 (85), Round 11, 2013 at Etihad Stadium

WALKING WOUNDED: Steve Johnson (knee) is among the potential inclusions for Chris Scott’s side on Saturday night, with the three-time premiership player a chance to make his bow in season 2013. His protege Daniel Menzel (knee) will make his long-awaited return via the VFL, alongside defender Cameron Guthrie (calf). Ruckmen Hamish McIntosh (knee) and Dawson Simpson (back) are both still out, with rookie Mark Blicavs and Trent West to shoulder the ruck duties again. Josh Hunt (glandular fever) may make his return in the VFL this weekend, while George Burbury (foot) and Josh Cowan (Achilles) are also potential starters in the twos. Key defender Jared Rivers will miss again, after injuring his knee in the Round 1 win over Hawthorn. Jordan Murdoch (hand) will have to pass a fitness test to be named in the 22.

Carlton’s forward line remains decimated by injury, with Eddie Betts (jaw), Jarrad Waite (calf) and Shaun Hampson (appendix) all under duress. Hampson is the only one of the trio who could be fit to take on the Cats, but he is still in doubt. Andrew Collins (ankle) and David Ellard (hamstring) will also miss another week of senior football due to their respective niggles. But in a welcome boost, Heath Scotland will make his first appearance of the year following his club-imposed suspension.

FORM: The Cats have produced two miraculous victories in their opening two matches of the season – coming from five goals down against Hawthorn, and arresting a 41-point deficit against North Melbourne to maintain an unbeaten record. While they have looked flat-footed for much of the time in the first half of games, their second halves have been nothing short of electric. The injection of speed brought by the likes of Travis Varcoe, Steven Motlop and Billie Smedts makes the Cats hard to man up against. Tom Hawkins and James Podsiadly have been solid contributors up forward so far, but they have got plenty of help from Allen Christensen (four goals), Mitchell Duncan (three) and Paul Chapman (three).

For all their valiant efforts over their past five quarters of football, Carlton have been unable to break their duck in 2013. Their fightback in Round 1 was admirable, but also pointed out how shoddy they were in the first three quarters. They took plenty of confidence into their Round 2 affair with Collingwood, and despite getting out to the best part of a three-goal lead minus their best forward, Betts, they were unable to finish off an undermanned Pies. The Blues stuck 15 more tackles against the Pies than they did the Tigers, and if they can maintain or increase that pressure on the ball carrier against the Cats, then it would have them in the mix to chalk up win number one for Mick Malthouse.
